16 killed as plane burst into flames



A chattered Associated Airlines plane, with registration number 5NBJY carrying the corpse of late former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, his family, friends and some top government officials crashed landed within the precinct of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos today.

The plane was conveying the body of the former governor, who died on September 13, to Akure, the state capital, for the final burial ceremonies.

The airplane is said to have lost control of the engine less than a minute after take-off from the local wing of the MMIA before the crash.

The 30-seat Brazilian-made turboprop Embrae-120, with other 20 passengers on board crashed around 9.20am by the Sahara Group building few metres away from the MMIA access gate.
Residents around the area said that the plane exploded mid-air before coming down.
