Sitting for long hours is associated with an
increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and
heart disease, according to a recent research published in the International
Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
The study, led by Kansas State University
researcher Richard Rosenkranz, was carried out on a sample of 63,048 Australian
men aged 45-65 found out that men who sat for more than four hours a day were
at a significantly increased risk of developing chronic disease compared to
those who sat for less than four hours.
The prevalence of chronic diseases climbed up
as the number of hours the participants spent sat down increased. Those who sat
for more than six hours a day were at a particularly high risk of diabetes.
This finding is especially relevant to office
workers, who spend the majority of their day sitting at their desk.
