The Health Implications of Fear

Mrs Kamila sprang to her feet like a frightened gazette when Akpan, the gardener, ran into the room holding a pair of shears. Her blood pressure jumped straight into orbit and within a fraction of seconds she landed on the ground like a game shot down from a tree by a hunter. I

t took the life-saving effort of a neighbour who is a member of the Nigerian Red Cross Society to resuscitate her before an ambulance came and drove her to hospital.

Mrs Kamila had known pain all her life and because of that she had lived in constant fear. She lost her husband, a military officer, to a peace keeping mission in Congo and her two sons to a fatal auto crash. So, when Apkan ran into the sitting room panting like a thirsty dog, she thought that something bad had happened to her family again. But Akpan was only there to inform her that her first and only surviving son, Kelvin, who had been in Germany for his degree program for what seemed like ages without contacting any member of his family was at the gate.

What is Fear?
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. It is like a magnet that attracts negative conditions. It is such a powerful force that creates negative circumstances around a person.
Fear has a strong tie with worry which is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind, if encouraged. It cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.
Small molehill problems grow into large emotional mountains that would be difficult to climb just with fear and worry.
