DANCE- HEALTH BENEFITS

Revived Dance Group
This post was actually motivated by a video clip of a group called Revived Dance Group I saw yesterday. I was so thrilled by this group that my eyes glistened with tears of excitement and wonder. These children were practically twirling their body as though they were no bones in them and when I tried one of their many steps I had to advise myself against going further.

Poverty in Africa: The Untold Stories

Africa is an immensely beautiful continent. It is not just the second largest continent in terms of land mass alone but a sight for sore eyes. From the friendly weather and the amazing resources to the dazzling wildlife and stunning heritage sites, it is undoubtedly the bright and shining centre of the world.

But if majority of Africans can’t boast of good education, credible and transparent government, potable water supply, state-of-the-art public infrastructures, reliable power supply, adequate security and effective healthcare delivery like their counterparts in other continents, the question then is; what kind of beauty is the beauty of Africa?

Our Health Sector- Nigerians Who Have Done Us Proud

The importance of health cannot ever be overstretched. It is undoubtedly the fulcrum of every nation because as the saying goes, “a healthy nation is a wealthy nation”. But unfortunately, the health sector of this nation is lavishly treated as a fifth wheel. No month passes by without healthcare providers engaging in industrial actions (go on strike as we often say) just to draw government’s attention to the colossal mess in some of our hospitals. Is this meant to be so?

The Fight Against Fake Drugs in Nigeria- Dora Akunyili Lives on

Dr. Dora Akunyili

Once-upon-a-time, fake drugs and substandard food products such as stockfish, turkey, chicken, rice, fish etc,  industrial chemicals, cosmetics and wines created a huge market in Nigeria. Both foreign and local irresponsible elements out-snookered or connived with some powerful authorities to flood our country with these fake products. The ripple and domino effects were the deaths of innocent people and the dent on our image as a nation, respectively. According to thisdaylive.com, in 1989, over 150 children died as a result of Paracetamol syrup containing diethylene glycol. This was how bad the situation was.

Climate change and infectious disease: The Nigerian experience

Climate change- the weather pattern of a place over a period of time, which range from 30 to 40 years-has been with us for about three and a half decades. Its prominence came to the fore during the Rio dejanerio conference in Brazil in 1992. Since then much has been said about it culminating in workshops, symposia, conferences, conventions summits leading to polices, treaties, protocols etc. Most of these policies, treaties, protocols and even enactments have been pursued or implemented to an extent, but a lot still needs to be done so as to address it totally. A serious dimension of the climate change scenario is its effect on diseases – infectious diseases.

Hydrocephalus- Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

Roona Begum
It was heartbreaking reading up a story, five months ago, in dailymail about Roona Begum- a three-year-old hydrocephalus patient. In three years, Baby Roona, as reported by dailymail, smiled for the first time after a successful surgery to reduce the size of her head. Looking at the smiling face of this pure soul I was torn in-between smiling with her and weeping at the condition she found herself.

PID and Cervical cancer- Things every woman must know.

Dr. Adepiti Clement
“The commonest problem that can follow chronic PID or even an acute PID when not properly managed is that the tubes can be damaged... In the case where they are totally damaged, then the woman would suffer from infertility because there’s no way the sperm that is coming from the man would meet the egg…” Dr Clement

Adults also need to be vaccinated!

When you were little, your mother- God bless all mothers- took you to the hospital to get polio, MMR and other vaccines just so you will be strong for her. I am sure you can picture that even if you can’t remember it clearly?

After the doctor had shot the medical liquid into you, your high-pitch cry rented the air and then she looked into your eyes, dabbed your tears with her hands and smiled that smile you can only see in the faces of mothers- a mother’s love is the greatest of all.

My two favourite soups are egusi and okra. The special love I have for egusi soup made me learned how to prepare it very well but the same cannot be said of my ability to prepare okra soup even though it is easier to do so.

7 Health Rules You Must Obey!

In my tribe when an elder is pleased with you and he wants to bless you, one of the things (s)he would say is ka kwa nka which means ‘may you grow old.’

Old age is a time of rest and a period of stock taking. It is that period when you sit back in silence to admire and enjoy the fruits of your many years of labour- your children, grandchildren, house (s), company (ies) and your other achievements. It is a blessing which every one of us should wish for but this blessing is like a seed which indeed must be cultivated and nurtured until its roots are strong in the soil.

Who Dash Monkey Banana?

Image: Independent.co.uk

If you have had the privilege of visiting a zoo before I am sure you know, first hand, that monkeys prefer bananas to other fruits. Banana which is botanically known as Musa spp. gives them a special kind of highness or frenzy. When you approach their cage with a finger of banana it’s as though you have brought them bliss. They begin to salivate even when they know that the finger of banana in your hand may not be for them.

Child sexual abuse- are men going insane?

Image: channelstv.com

What are our men turning into for Christ sake!

Every day you flip through the pages of a Nigerian newspaper you would read stories of how an innocent girl child was sexually violated by a man old enough to be her grandfather and you begin to wonder what the world is turning into.
