As a soft August rain
pitter-pattered on the roof top of a cottage hospital in the small town of Kuda,
a baby’s cry echoed from the delivery ward. It was its first cry.
Claps and sounds of laughter
rented the air. The mother of the baby-a beautiful woman in her early thirties-
gave a sharp inward breath through her nose, as if assailed by a sudden twinge
of joyful pain. Her nine months of carrying a life in her womb is finally over.
